What is the range of $r$ in the formula for parallel axes theorem. Eg. if two discs are attached at a certain point on their circumference and both are in a plane, what is the moment of inertia of the system about axis of one of the discs,so should i consider the other disc as point mass located at $2R$ or apply parallel axes on it. In many such questions they take the other body as point mass and in some cases they apply parallel axis theorem on it.
